James Dean
Gavin
Mar 1952 — Jul 5, 2026
James "Jim" Dean Gavin
James "Jim" Dean Gavin, age 74, of Condon, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with gastric cancer.
Jim was born on March 4, 1952, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to James Martin Gavin and Leona (Follett) Gavin.
Jim met his wife, Karen (Cox) Gavin, through Ruralite magazine. They were married on November 7, 1987, and shared nearly 39 years together.
Jim began his career in the lumber industry, working in a lumber mill before moving into the woods as a log bumper and skidder operator. He spent more than 20 years in the industry before its decline prompted a career change. Determined to provide for his family, Jim returned to college and earned an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he accepted a position with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) in Salem, Oregon, where he worked for more than 20 years until his retirement.
After retiring, Jim and Karen moved to Condon, Oregon, to be closer to family. Never one to sit still, Jim continued working part-time for the City of Condon, caring for local parks.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his children, Lorraine Craig, Olivia Gavin Sturgis, Jennie Gavin-Tremblay, Jake Cooper, and Sarah Gavin; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He shared a particularly special bond with his grandchildren, Layla and Jaxson Cooper. One of his greatest joys was seeing them every morning on their way to school while he worked in the park.
In keeping with Jim's wishes, no formal service will be held. Instead, family and friends gathered on June 6, 2026, to celebrate his life while he was still able to enjoy their company. It was a special day filled with family, friends, and many former coworkers whose lives he had touched.
Jim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet dedication, generous spirit, and unconditional love for his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Sweeney Payton Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements. Please leave your condolence messages for the family below.
